Creative Director | Digital Design Lead | Art Director | Designer
Kory is a Pennsylvania-based Art Director with expertise in the creative direction and design of diverse brands across all channels. He excels at editorial design, is pretty darn good when it comes to branding and marketing, and just flat-out lives for solving problems.
He runs Kory Kennedy Design and is currently Art Director for Sojourners magazine, where he handles the art direction and design of the entire book each month…Heavy on the conceptual illustration assignments.
Over a long and storied career, Kory was Design Director of Entertainment Weekly, Runner’s World, and SPIN magazines. He also held high-profile Art Director roles at Rolling Stone, Sports Illustrated, People, and Chess Life magazines. Along with traditional publishing work, he was Creative Director for content marketing agency Foundry 360 and Digital Design Lead for the Hearst Enthusiast Group. And for good measure, he is also a scrappy entrepreneur who owned and operated his own BYOB painting party business in the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania.
Kory graduated from Parsons School of Design in New York, majoring in Communication Design. One summer between semesters, he wrote, directed, produced, and acted in an Off-Off-Broadway performance piece called "Big Cheesecake," complete with originally choreographed dance sequences.
He has received numerous awards from Society of Publication Designers, American Society of Magazine Editors, Society of Illustrators, American Illustration, Type Directors Club, and Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce.
Scores are based on a 10-point system for each of the six following criteria:
Does the design stand out, provide something new to the market or supplement/improve an existing product or service?
The arrangement of visual elements, encompassing layout, balance, flow, and how effectively a message is communicated.
Durability and functionality — the quality and longevity of the design and overall interaction with the user.
The benefits delivered to the user and/or society by the design — in addition to fulfilling its practical purpose, will the design create a sense of enjoyment and satisfaction?
Artistic value of the form, shape, color, texture, finishing, engineering, material used, etc.
Does the design meet the intended purpose and needs of the user?
Each juror's scores will be totaled (60 points maximum) and the averages will determine award recognition levels. Student entries will be judged separately using the same criteria.
10: Clearly excellent work. Best of the best. No weak spots.
9: Extremely fine work. However, missing some quality that would make it exceptional.
8: Overall very good. May have one weakness but makes a highly favorable impression.
6–7: Acceptable, solid work.
1–5: Average or below average work.
Scores of 40-44
Scores of 45-49
Scores of 50+
Highest category score, but not best in show
